Honoring lives lost at Santa Barbara cemetery

Memorial Day is a time to reflect and to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Patriots from all over the country celebrate the day including in Santa Barbara.

Patriotic songs, flowers, and endless amount of flags have become an annual site and tradition at the Santa Barbara cemetery on Memorial Day. Folks of all ages honoring and remembering those lives lost to bring freedom. Speakers from different military branches shared powerful words during the hour-long ceremony.

“I think it’s important that we not only acknowledge the men and women who have gone before us but also to teach our younger generation this tribute to our freedoms,” said Larry Cook, who is a Navy Veteran.

Across the way, at De La Guerra there was a very different ceremony that took place. It was a gathering to shed light on the reality of war.

“The message that we want this to end,” said Jeb Sprague, he is a professor at Santa Barbara City College. “We want an alternative; we want a better future for our kids and our loved ones.”

While Memorial Day has different meanings to different people, one thing remains the same; remembering and not forgetting.

“It’s actually remembering soldiers who lost their lives, of veterans that lost their limbs and also in memory of people in other countries,” said Sprague.
