Law Enforcement takes part in National Drug Take-Back Day

Law enforcement agencies on the central coast collected old prescription drugs as part of National Drug Take-Back Day Saturday afternoon.

Santa Barbara City Police collected about four boxes of old prescription drugs at La Cumbre Plaza.

The San Luis Obispo CHP collected 280 pounds of expired or unused prescription drugs.

Police say a majority of abused drugs are obtained from home medicine cabinets.

“We are just trying to eliminate the possibility of drugs that are laying around people’s houses ending up in the wrong hands,” said Officer Bryan Kerr. “It’s toxic for the environment, so we are trying not to have the medications end up either in the water or in landfills.”

If you have expired or unused medications and would like to get rid of them, contact your local law enforcement agency.
