Yachts on display for Opening Day
Sailors dressed their sailboats with nautical flags for Opening Day in the Channel Islands Harbor on Saturday.
Members of the Pacific Corinthian Yacht Club said Opening Day is a tradition that started on the East Coast when the ice melted.
Dick McNish said even though Californians can sail all year, Opening Day is a tradition.
McNish said Cheerio, his 87-year-old wooden boat built in San Pedro, is ready to go.
McNish rebuilt the 1931 sailboat in 1994 and 1995 and races her with an award-winning crew in classic yacht races.
Other clubs will hold Opening Day celebrations in the weeks to come.
