Authorities comb Prefumo Canyon for missing SLO woman

San Luis Obispo Police and SLO County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue teams spent the day Sunday searching for evidence up Prefumo Canyon.

Authorities are trying to piece together why Kristen Marti is missing.

Fitz Pearls and his friends got more than they bargained for during a Sunday afternoon hike near Prefumo Canyon.

“There was a full crew of rescue and sheriffs, there was some canine,” said Pearls.

Pearls walked right into a large-scale search operation for a missing at-risk woman.

“They were basically boxing areas off and eliminating areas that they’ve already searched and then they were proceeding to other areas that haven’t been searched,” said Pearls.

Kristen Marti was last seen in the 1800 block of Prefumo Canyon Road in a parked maroon colored sedan with an unknown adult man on January 9th.

“We’re looking for any kind of evidence of a person. It may be of any type of crime, so you’re looking for anything that would be clothing, might be related. Just anything that we could, that could possibly associate with her,” said Captain Chris Staley, SLO PD.

At least 25-50 Search and Rescue volunteers and eight K-9’s were trying to cover as much ground as possible.

“It’s rather rare that we do these, we don’t do them very often. Often times when we have someone that’s missing we don’t necessarily have a last known location where we do with this one so we’re trying to make sure that we cover all of our bases and make sure that if there is any evidence we find it,” said Captain Staley.

While authorities search for any sign of the missing woman, residents like Pearls, are left rattled.

“I was kind of on edge. We didn’t know what was around the bend, there’s a lot of blind curves and you don’t know what you’re going to see,” said Pearls.

Captain Staley says crews are following up on some things they found Sunday and the search will continue for awhile.

Police do have a person of interest in this case.
