Santa Maria softball league cancels dozens of games due to recent showers
Moms and coaches from the Santa Maria Girls Softball League say they’ve already had to cancel about 80 games. You can blame it on the rain.
“The [girls are] upset that they haven’t been able to play,” said softball mom Raquel Acosta. “They wanna get out there and play.”
But for now, her two daughters and more than 250 other girls will not be able to play an actual game. Parts of the field are under water -making it impossible to do anything.
“You know the city doesn’t want the girls slipping and…hurting themselves,” said coach Yvette Gamache. “I’ve seen it personally, a little girl sliding and broke her ankle. And if it’s not the right conditions they can hurt themselves really bad.”
That’s why the city of Santa Maria has closed off all of its sports fields until conditions improve. But the last minute game cancellations are putting a strain on parents.
“It’s hard because people have jobs or childcare for little ones,” shared Yvette Gamache. “And to keep rescheduling I know it’s hard for me.”
The tournament set for May 5th will already be pushed back by at least one week
