Lompoc sidewalk, crosswalk project to provide safer walking for school children

Construction on a sidewalk and crosswalk safety project in Lompoc has begun and is expected to take 35 working days to complete.

The project, which began construction on Nov. 27, will make walking safer for children going to school.

Lompoc’s Sidewalk Infill Project is funded mostly by a $160,000 grant from the North County Measure A Safe Routes to School Program. The rest of the project is being paid for with funds from the Transportation Development Act.

Brightly painted concrete bulb-outs, curb ramps, and flashing crosswalk beacons will be installed at the crosswalk on North Avenue at L Street near La Canada Elementary School. The crosswalk improvements will provide extra protection for pedestrians.

Close to Fillmore Elementary School, a missing sidewalk will be added in the 600 block of East Pine Avenue along the south side of the street. Curbs and ramps will be installed.
