Vandenberg Airmen help Korean War vet keep home

Airmen from Vandenberg Air Force Base volunteered their time to help a Korean War veteran keep his home.

Masao Shinomiya is wheelchair-bound and was in danger of losing coverage on his home due to neglect.

The Airmen cleared over 6,000 pounds of green waste from the 88-year-old man’s Santa Maria home on Saturday.

The volunteers pulled weeds, dug up bushes and trees, and transported the debris to a dumpster.

Senior Airman Ryan Logan organized the clean up.

“Shinomiya is a veteran from the Korean War and this is something we had to do for him,” said Logan. “We look out for one another, and this is everything we talk about every day – it’s integrity first.”

Members of the community will assist in the coming weeks to make sure Shinomiya’s lawn is well-kempt and maintained.
