Residents protest proposed Fisherman’s Wharf apartments

Protestors lined up along the corner of Channel Islands Boulevard and Victoria Avenue in Oxnard on Sunday afternoon to speak out against a proposed apartment development.

They said they are in favor of reviving Fisherman’s Wharf, but they are opposed to a plan to build about 400 apartments to help fund it.

Ventura County Supervisors and the Harbor Department back the apartment project, but it still needs to overcome hurdles with the city of Oxnard and the California Coastal Commission.

Longtime Harbor Director Lyn Krieger has said the apartments are needed to subsidize the revitalization of the run down wharf.

Members of the Harbor & Beach Community Alliance disagree and won’t give up the fight.

Many are concerned about congestion, traffic and quality of life.

People holding picket signs said the Bard and McGrath families didn’t intend the land to be privatized.

They plan to hold a “Revive not Privatize!” holiday gift party fundraiser at the Channel Islands Yacht Club on Friday, Nov. 10, from 5:30-8p.m.

Oxnard Mayor Tim Flynn and former CCC chair Sara Wan are scheduled to speak.

Organizers also plan to honor Joanna Bard Newton, Travers Newton and Thomas Volk, the first Channel Islands Harbor Director.
