Family of man who drowned in Santa Barbara Harbor sues city, business owner
The family of a Westmont College graduate who drowned in the Santa Barbara Harbor is suing the city for negligence.
28-year-old Davies Kabogoza died in April after falling into the water while paddle boarding. His family claims the business that rented the paddle board to him did not take the necessary steps to ensure his safety.
Santa Barbara Sailing Center, which is a tenant of the city, rented the paddle board to Kabogoza on April 29.
Kabogoza’s family alleges that the business did not ask if Kabogoza could swim, did not help him select an appropriate life vest for his skill level, and failed to show him how to activate his inflatable life vest.
The suit also claims that the paddle board rented out to Kabogoza was not appropriate for someone who couldn’t swim and that the business should’ve recommended or required he use a leash to tether to the board.
The wrongful death lawsuit seeks damages from Harbor Master and Waterfront Director Scott Riedman and Santa Barbara Sailing Center owner Skip Abed, as well as other city employees.
