Ventura country music radio station checks on contest winners after mass shooting

California Country 100.7 KHAY radio station sent many contest winners to the Route 91 Harvest Festival this past weekend.

The Ventura-based country radio station spent Monday morning checking on its winners. So far, employees have not been able to reach one person.

“It’s a tough day for all of us here because we are a country music radio station and for this event to happen at one of the biggest country concerts in the nation is particularly tragic for us,” said Chris Cox, Cumulus Media operations manager.

Cox said the team’s number one job is to get ahold of their listeners.

Dave Daniels, KHAY’s Morning Wake-Up Call host, started his shift an hour earlier to bring relief to listeners.

“We were able to bring some comfort to people who were finding out about this tragic thing that happened at the Route 91 Harvest Festival, just to connect, and also to get people to interact with the show because we’re one big family,” said Daniels.

Survivors of the festival called KHAY with their stories and recalled the scary moments during country star Jason Aldean’s performance.

“They said it sounded like there was a malfunction in the speakers, that it was crackling and popping, at one moment the stage went dark so they thought they blown a power breaker, but it continued and people started to fall,” said Daniels.

More than 50 people have been confirmed dead in the mass shooting and hundreds of others were injured.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has released a number for families to call if they’re looking for missing loved ones. For more information, call 1-866-535-5654.
