Assemblyman Cunningham in Las Vegas during shooting

It was supposed to be a nice evening out at Mandalay Bay, catching a show with his wife, when everything changed in a matter of minutes.

“The first clue that something unusual was happening was they stopped the show right in the middle. It seemed like an odd time to have an intermission and they came over the loud speaker and said the show will resume shortly and we waited for a minute or two,” Assemblyman Jordan Cunningham tells us over the phone.

Cunningham then went on social media to search for answers. He soon learned about the nightmare that was taking place both outside the resort and 32 floors above them.

“I didn’t feel too secure [but] I didn’t panic. I showed my wife the twitter thing because I didn’t want to create a panic situation – you know there’s probably 500 other people in this theater.. I’m pretty sure that not everybody knew what was going on,” Cunningham explains.

The assemblyman says his first instinct was to look for a way out. He and his wife tried to head out the closest exit doors to them and saw a swarm of police cars on either side of the exit.

They went back to their seats and remained there until three in the morning.

“There was one really tense moment where I think somebody tried to get into the theater from outside doors and they had all the doors locked from the inside. The police told everybody to get down and 500 people in the blink of an eye just drop to the ground but it turned out to be nothing,” Cunningham says.

Everyone inside the theater was bused to a parking lot at UNLV where Ubers and Lyfts were waiting to take them back to their hotel.

“We’re feeling both very fortunate to be so close to a tragedy and be okay but at the same time just terribly bad for the victims of this,” says Cunningham.

Cunningham asks that everyone who is able to to donate blood to please do so as hospitals continue to treat the victims of this attack.
