The United States Coast Guard rescued an injured 8-year-old girl near Smugglers Cove on Santa Cruz Island Sunday afternoon.

The Coast Guard’s Los Angeles/Long Beach unit received the distress call at around 2:15 p.m.

A man aboard a 26-foot recreational vessel reported a young girl sustained a back injury and requested medical assistance.

A Coast Guard MH-65 helicopter crew from Forward Operating Base Mugu responded to the area and hoisted the girl from the scene.
