Cal Poly student crowned Miss California

The 2017 Miss California was crowned Saturday evening and she’s a student at a local college.

Jillian Smith was named the newest Miss California at the Fresno Saroyan Theater during the organization’s annual pageant.

Smith, a Grass Valley native, represented the Yosemite Valley in Friday’s pageant. She’s currently a senior at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo.

Smith’s talent was piano and her platform focuses on the Dude, Be Nice Project , which is a “platform to inspire people to build a positive community by recognizing a person or group in a fun, creative, and meaningful way.”

Smith will represent California at the 2017 Miss America competition in Atlantic City in September.

46 women from throughout California competed for this year’s crown. Miss California will receive a minimum scholarship of $15,000 from the Miss California Scholarship Organization as well as a $5,000 scholarship from the City of Fresno.
