Two killed after vehicle goes off side of Gibraltar Road near Santa Barbara

Two people are dead after a vehicle went off the side of Gibraltar Road outside of Santa Barbara late Monday night.

At around 9:25 p.m., crews responded to the scenic roadway after receiving a report of a vehicle that had gone off the side of the roadway, tumbling approximately 300 feet.

Santa Barbara County Fire, Santa Barbara City Fire and the Montecito Fire District all responded.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office search and rescue team was also called in after responders learned that there were occupants stuck in the vehicle.

At least five occupants were in the vehicle when it went off the roadway.

Two of the occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. A third occupant was in critical condition with major injuries.

A Santa Barbara County Fire helicopter flew overhead to hoist the third occupant and transport them to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

The remaining two occupants suffered minor and moderate injuries and were transported to the hospital via ambulance.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
