Crews battle brush fires along two highways in Santa Barbara County

Multiple fire agencies are working to put out two different fires in the south Santa Barbara County area.

One fire started around 11:30 a.m. along Highway 101 just north of El Capitan State Beach.

This as on the northbound side of the freeway. Santa Barbara County Fire officials said firefighters were able to put out this fire in 15 minutes.

It burned about a quarter acre of grass and no structures were threatened. The cause of the fire is unknown.

According to emergency radio traffic, crews on scene of this fire saw a man leaving the area on bike once the fire started.

A second fire broke out at about 11:47 a.m. along Highway 1 about 12 miles south of Lompoc. When firefighters arrived, they discovered multiple spot fires burning along the roadway in light brush, according to Santa Barbara County Fire Capt. Dave Zaniboni.

An air support unit made several water drops and the fires were contained to approximately half an acre to an acre, according to Zaniboni.

In all, the fires on Highway 1 scorched about three acres. No structures were threatened or lost and there were no injuries reported in this incident.

Highway 1 was briefly closed due to the fire equipment on the scene.
