Driver in fatal Santa Maria crash formally charged with crime

Formal charges have been filed against 29-year-old Sergio Chagolla-Chagolla in a deadly crash that occurred in the city of Santa Maria killing a Santa Maria resident.

The Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office charged Chagolla-Chagolla with felony driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury. That charge includes two special allegations that more than one victim was injured and that two separate victims suffered great bodily injury.

The complaint also charges Chagolla-Chagolla with misdemeanor driving on a suspended license.

The fatal crash occurred at the intersections of Railroad and Donovan in Santa Maria on May 28. 57-year-old Lyvelyn Ordas Reyes was killed in that collision. A total of five people were taken to Marian Regional Medical Center.

Alcohol appears to have played a factor in the wreck, according to police.
