Wine, Waves & Beyond holds preview event in Pismo Beach

For the 8th straight year, a celebration of the “Classic California” lifestyle will return with the popular event known as “Wine, Waves & Beyond.” The three-day lifestyle festival will once again feature several different events, all designed to highlight the cultural experience of the Central Coast. “It’s really turned into a signature event for the Central Coast,” said Charles Crellin, general manager of Boutique Hotel Collection, which created the event in 2009. “We have everything from the surf night with a film premiere. We have the Barrel to Barrel, where we have 30 wineries, breweries, silent auction. We have live music, It’s just a fabulous day overlooking the ocean in Pismo Beach.” On Thursday night at The Cliff’s Resort in Pismo Beach, event organizers gave a sneak preview to media members and sponsors of what’s in store for those who later attend. Wine and appetizers were served by the Boutique Hotel Collection culinary team and local vintners, mirroring the Rabobank Barrel to Barrel event that is scheduled for Saturday, June 3. Wine, Waves & Beyond will be held June 2-4. It begins on Friday, June 2, with the Surf Movie Night at the Fremont Theatre in San Luis Obispo. “The Surf Night at the Fremont will be an extraordinary event with Chris Burkhard’s new movie,” said Crellin. “That will be really amazing.” Burkhard, a world renown photographer who is from the Central Coast, will debut his new movie, “Under the Arctic Sky,” which features a team of six surfers who test their skills in the frozen waters along the shores of Iceland. The film was shot just before the biggest storm to hit Iceland in 25 years was about to arrive. The Surf Movie Night will open at 5:30 p.m. Rabobank Barrel to Barrel will be held at The Cliff’s Resort from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. It will feature 50 aera wineries and breweries, as well as local cuisine. As opposed to years past, the event will no longer be held during the evening. “We moved it from the early evening to the afternoon because we thought people would enjoy the weather and time a little bit better,” said Crellin. On Sunday, Wine, Waves & Beyond wraps up with its popular 805 Surf Classic and Beach Party. The surf contest begins in Pismo Beach at 7 a.m, while the Beach Party starts at noon. In addition, the vintage VW display will be held at the Addie St. parking lot beginning at 9:30 a.m. All proceeds for the event will benefit GleanSLO, a division of the Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County, as well as Still Frothy, a local non-profit organization which helps out local youth.
