Big Rig Flips with 35,000 Pounds of Cucumbers on U.S. 101

A big rig accident partially blocked southbound U.S. Highway 101 just south of Sea Cliff in Ventura Thursday morning.

The California Highway Patrol said the crash happened at about 2:45 a.m. when a 35-year-old driver from Canada allowed his semitrailer to veer to the right shoulder and crashed into a call box. The driver lost control and the semi rolled onto its right side coming to a rest within the No. 2 and 3 lanes of the freeway.

The semitrailer was carrying roughly 35,000 pounds of cucumbers at the time of the crash. It’s unclear if any of the cargo spilled onto the roadway.

The freeway lanes were to remain shut down to allow crews to offload the cucumbers from the trailer. The No. 1 lane was open during the incident.

The driver of the semi was the only person inside the big rig at the time of the crash and he was not injured. No other injuries were reported.

Authorities say the 35-year-old driver fell asleep but there were no injuries. The official cause of the collision is being investigated by CHP.
