Drought Has Many Beekeepers Moving Out of State
The drought has taken the sting out of bees, and many beekeepers are moving their honey-making creatures out of California.
Beekeepers have to be mindful of how much honey they take away from these bees because right now, it’s not about selling honey, it’s about keeping bees alive. That’s exactly what Therabee in Atascadero is doing.
“We’re taking a hiatus. What we’re going to do is let the bees keep all the honey,” said Martha Van Inwegen from Therabee. “Our beekeepers in Southern California aren’t going to harvest this year and the rest of the year as well.”
There are more than 500 commercial beekeepers in the state that say there aren’t enough sources of pollen and nectar to carry on with business, and some don’t want to leave California so they are waiting this situation out, at least until next summer.
