Veteran Fire Battalion Chief Escapes Major Injury After Vehicle Rollover

A veteran Santa Barbara City firefighter walked away from a vehicle crash and rollover with just a few cuts and bruises Saturday.

Battalion Chief Robert Mercado was heading home northbound on Highway 101 between Refugio State Beach and Mariposa Reina around 8:30 a.m. when his right rear tire blew out.

Mercado lost control of the city vehicle which went up and embankment and flipped over.

Mercado had his seatbelt on and was able to crawl out one of the vehicle’s windows.

He suffered minor injuries and is going to be OK.
