The accident happened at about 7 a.m. when a car traveling west on Highway 217 slid off the road and rolled over into a culvert.

Emergency crews responded quickly, but couldn’t readily locate the car.

The driver, who was trapped in his car, managed to call 911 and helped in his own rescue.

“He was able to speak to our dispatchers, via a cell phone, to direct us to find him,” said Capt. Larry Ryan with the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

The driver suffered minor injuries and was treated by medical personnel at the scene.
