Open Streets Movement Seeks Partnerships

The open streets movement that began in Columbia is catching on in Santa Barbara.

Open Streets is seeking partners to make Cabrillo Boulevard come alive October 24.

A two-mile stretch of the boulevard along the beach will be closed to cars on the fourth Saturday in October.

Thursday, organizers held a kick-off fundraiser at the Telephone Brewing Company in Santa Barbara.

SBBike will be a fiscal sponsor.

Robin Elander of Global Good Impact said people enjoyed dancing, fitness and yoga classes in the street last year.

She hopes people will enjoy the open space in a new ways this year.

Kent Epperson of Traffic Solutions said Open Streets is redefining how we use public spaces. He said taxpayers who pay for roads can reuse that space for the day.
