Congresswoman Capps Visits Northern Part of District

Congresswoman Lois Capps has 22 months left in office and she says she will keep busy.

On Thursday she spent her day in the northern part of her district.

Capps went to Head Start in Nipomo, it’s an early education program and something Capps said says the county needs more of.

She then discussed agriculture and business with a bamboo farmer in Paso Robles.

Congresswoman Lois Capps has served in the house since 1998, this is her last term, and her retirement is nothing more than a personal decision she says…

“That’s why I keep pushing for more funding for programs like Head Start,” she said.

Capps said, “I will work everyday as long as I can, as long as I’m in the position.”

Her retirement is nothing more than a personal decision she says.

Capps said, “I’ve been thinking about it for a time. It’s a 2 years job application every two years that I’ve run for office.”

Boundaries did change in the 2010 census, bringing in more conservative voters as well as communities that were not part of her district, but she said the changes didn’t play a role in her decision. Capps said “The emphasis is on people. I’m privileged to get to know, the opportunities to see what their needs are that I can meet.”
Her daughter Laura moved back to the area from Washington DC a few years ago.
Some have speculated congresswoman Capps was keeping her seat warm for her daughter, but Capps said this was the right time for her to retire.

Capps said, “I’m pleased that Laura has come back to the community where she grew up and is now involving herself in many activities. She’s always been interested in politics; she worked in public policy issues, does still. She will see what her future holds and I’ll be her number one supporter whatever it is that she should decide.”

As for her future, Capps said she will now have more time to spend with family.

Capps said, “Both of my kids being here and their families is a source of wonderful support for me.”
