UCSB Terminates Phi Sigma Kappa
In less than three months, a second fraternity has been shut down at UCSB.
“Apparently they are trying to kick Greek life off campus but I mean it’s Santa Barbara what do you expect?,” said UCSB senior Marc Corpus.
Phi Sigma Kappa was terminated on Tuesday. Word among students is the fraternity has been on suspension since January for violating conduct policies. UCSB’s Office of Public Affairs released a statement, saying:
“Due to unsafe new member education practices and perpetuation of an unsafe environment for members and the UCSB Greek community, the Phi Sigma Kappa International Fraternity has deemed closure necessary to ensure the health and safety of their active and new members. As a partner institution, the University of California, Santa Barbara is terminating recognition of the local chapter, effective immediately, in support of and in conjunction with the International Fraternity’s decision.”
Back in December Beta Theta Pi was shut down after reports of underage drinking and hazing.
“If it was an issue of hazing or alcohol abuse, I think it’s the right thing to do,” said UCSB Sophomore Hannah Mussey.
