NIPOMO, Calif. – On January 28, 1965, five men held the first ever board meeting of the Nipomo Community Services District, which was formed to address water quality and supply issues in what was then a small community. It’s safe to say, much has changed over the past 50 years.

At that meeting, the board members each dug into their pocket and donated $10 to pay for writing materials and a post box rental. The first annual budget was just $15,393.50. Now, half a century later, the budget is several million dollars. The district recently completed a $13 million wastewater treatment facility and its much-debated, often-controversial $17 million supplemental water project is nearing completion.

To recognize the historical occasion, the NCSD held a special open house at district headquarters on Wednesday morning. During the event, past board members were honored, awards for water conservation artwork were given to local students, members of the public were allowed to tour the building and view historical artifacts.

“We’re proud to be part of the District and to be carrying on this service to the community,” said Michael LeBrun, NCSD General Manager.

Among the first board members was the Jim Miller. His wife, who later served on the board, was among the many in attendance for the open house.

“It’s really exciting. It’s just a thrill to see what has taken place and I think Jim would have been proud,” said Peg Miller. “It’s mostly been positive. Nipomo is a wonderful place to live.”

LeBrun noted the district is poised to serve the growing unincorporated community, which now totals over 16,000 residents, for many years to come.

“Our business plan is to be here for the next 50 and the next 100 and so to serve for 50 years is truly special to us,” said LeBrun.

During the ceremonies, proclamations were given by by representatives of State Assemblyman Katcho Achadjian and newly elected 4th District Supervisor Lynn Compton, as well as a letter of recognition by Rep. Lois Capps.
