Sheriff’s Deputy Involved in Goleta Crash

An on-duty Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s deputy sustained minor injuries when his patrol car crashed into a 2014 Toyota Camry on Highway 101 northbound, near Glenn Annie Road Tuesday afternoon.

The accident happened at about 12:05 p.m. The California Highway Patrol said the Sheriff’s deputy was traveling in the number one lane (fast lane) behind 48-year-old Erin McGinty from Santa Cruz. The deputy had his lights and sirens on and was responding to an emergency call.

McGinty moved from the fast lane to the center lane on the freeway. Before the deputy could clear McGinty, she veered back into the fast lane. The Toyota and the patrol car collided with each other causing the deputy’s car to hit the center median. A second crash occurred between the two vehicles, after which, both stopped on the right shoulder until emergency services arrived.

Although neither McGinty or her passengers suffered any injuries, she did complain of neck pain according to CHP. The deputy was taken to Goleta Valley Hospital and was treated for wrist and head pain.

Alcohol and drugs were not a factor in this accident.
