Ocean Swimmers Brave Wednesday’s Wave

Lifeguards kept a close eye on ocean swimmers Wednesday.

They even changed the buoys and the course during the final Night Moves summer series at Leadbetter Beach.

Athletes usually swim one kilometer.

They swam a shorter course and had to brave the waves to get back to shore.

The waves appeared to attract more business at the East Beach Grill.

Workers said tourists kept asking if the high surf was normal.

Workers called it unusual.

The pounding waves are being pushed by Hurricane Marie.

South facing beaches saw the largest waves.

Lifeguards said unusual rip currents may be carved out underwater due to sand being pushed around by the surge.

A high surf advisory will continue through Friday night.
