Cal Poly Baseball Opens Regional With Win

Cal Poly baseball stuck with the same formula for the playoffs that made their regular season so special, solid pitching and timely hitting. Matt Imhof and Rick Reilly combined on a three-hitter as the Mustangs defeated Sacramento State 4-2 in their opening game of the NCAA Division 1 San Luis Obispo Regional. It’s the first time that Cal Poly has ever hosted an NCAA Regional and close to three thousand fans flocked to Baggett Stadium.

Imhof worked 7 2/3 innings allowing just two runs with only one of those earned. He is now 10-4 on the year as the Mustangs get set for Pepperdine on Saturday at 6 p.m. in a winner’s bracket contest. The Waves beat Arizona State 3-2.

Cal Poly scored a run in the second, one in the third and two more in the fourth. Mark Mathias and John Schuknecht each had two hits and one RBI for a Mustangs squad that is now 46-10 on the year.
