Opening Night of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival

The 2014 Santa Barbara International Film Festival kicked off at the historic Arlington Theater with the World Premier of Mission Blue, a documentary directed by Fisher Stevens and Robert Nixon.

The film chronicles the life long mission of legendary oceanographer Sylvia Earl. With more than 60 expeditions and 6000 hours logged underwater, Earl’s goal is to raise awareness about the problems our oceans are up against.

The opening premier was sold out and the film was dedicated to the late Mike DeGruy who died in 2012. His work as an underwater cinematographer still resonates.
