Companies challenged to hire veterans

There is a special window for veterans at the West Oxnard Job and Career Center.The staff is even hosting a Veterans orientation on May 14.

The Veteran Services Office in Ventura is also offering guidance to returning vets.
Veteran Services Officer Mike McManus said overall veteran unemployment is lower than the national average, but the unemployment rate for veterans between the ages of 18-24 is much higher.

That’s why the Obama administration announced a challenge to hire 100,000 veterans by the end of this year.

On Tuesday, President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama announced that the goal has been surpassed by about 200,000.

Many companies with household names have agreed to hire more veterans within the next five years. Their leadership and decision-making skills could be a good fit for employers, but the transition into civilian life isn’t always easy.

Employers who have committed to hiring veterans include Winco, UPS, Home Depot, McDonald’s, Walmart and AT&T.
