Mud run raises scholarship funds

The Ventura Police Officers Association usually hosts a golf tournament, but this year they decided to do something different.

The first ever Ventura Eco Xtreme Mud Challenge took place Sunday in the hills above Ventura City Hall.

Police and firefighters built three mud pits by bringing in 10,000 gallons of water. About 400 people ran, including some officers.

The entry fees will go to the Dee Dowell Scholarship Foundation. Sgt. Dowell is the only Ventura city police officer to be killed in the line of duty. Dowell was shot by a bank robbery suspect more than two decades ago.

Police raised about $8,000. Organizers said they are excited about making it an annual event.
