Overnight closure planned for Hwy. 101

Highway 101 through a portion of Santa Maria will be closed overnight all this week due to construction on the new Union Valley Parkway Interchange.

The closure runs daily from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Northbound traffic will exit the freeway at Clark Avenue and get back on the freeway at Betteravia Road. It will be the opposite for southbound traffic.

Some business owners along the detour route think it might bring in some extra cash.

“We’re open at 5. I don’t know how many other businesses are open that early around here to see that traffic if they are closing it at night. Other than the random extra cars driving by, there’s an extra chance,” said Adam Spence, manager at The Golden Donut.

Commuters can expect more closures like this to happen throughout the bridges construction. It is expected to be complete late this year or early next year.
