Ventura Boys & Girls Club turns 75

Members of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Ventura shared their aspirations with donors at the eighth annual Power of One Breakfast Thursday.

The event at the Wedgewood Banquet Center in Ventura marked the club’s 75th year.

Organizers said the club has a proven track record of help students graduate from high school. They say it also help them avoid teen pregnancy by giving them positive things to do.

Ann Deal, the founder and owner of Fashion Form, gave the keynote address.

Before sharing her story she interviewed teens with big goals.

Iriana Corona said she wants to go to Pepperdine University and become a child psychologist so she can help children have a happy life.

Another teen wants to be a Los Angeles Laker basketball player, and another wants to be a Boys & Girls Club CEO.

Anne Deal and Laverne Venus were also recognized for their contributions. Both donated $10,000 dollars to help the club hire more staff.

The club has 60 children on a waiting list.

With more staff, they will be able to expand the club’s membership.
