SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. - The Santa Barbara County Community Services Department, Parks Division, is now hiring lifeguards for beaches, pools and to serve as junior lifeguard instructors for this summer season from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend.

The County said that previous experience is not required for these positions. Applicants will receive all of their certifications free of charge by the first day of the season.

To qualify, candidates need only submit an application, attend tryouts in early April and pass all necessary required trainings during weekends in April and May.

“Santa Barbara County is known for our beautiful coastline,” Board of Supervisors Chair Gregg Hart said. “I encourage local residents to take advantage of this rewarding opportunity to serve our community in a beautiful environment, and for children to participate in our highly regarded Junior Lifeguard program.”

Working as a lifeguard is a great way to serve your community, improve your independence and interact with new people.

Santa Barbara County locations include Jalama, Arroyo Burro and Goleta beaches as well as pools at Cachuma Lake Campground and the Joseph Centeno Aquatics Complex in New Cuyama.

These positions will be paid from $15 to $19 per hour.

Applications can be found and submitted here at the SB Parks website.

The Hendrys Junior Lifeguard Program summer enrollment begins on April 1. The tryouts will be held at the Los Banos del Mar Pool on May 3 and 4. First-time junior lifeguards can pre-register here.

Hendry's Junior Lifeguards train at the Arroyo Burro Beach County Park and are instructed by certified Santa Barabara County Lifeguards.

The junior lifeguard program is offered in two sessions: the first runs from June 15 through July 2 and the second runs from July 13 through July 31. It costs $315 for a student to enroll in each three week session; siblings of enrollees will receive a $40 discount.

Scholarships and volunteer positions are also available. You can learn more about these events or apply for positions on the junior lifeguard page.
