Retirement ceremony held for military dog at Vandenberg Space Force Base

VANDENBERG, Calif. - A military dog that worked at Vandenberg Space Force Base has retired. A ceremony was held for Jewel on Thursday.

Jewel is a certified narcotics officer who served for six years, from 2015 5o 2021, at Vandenberg. During Thursday's ceremony, Jewel received military honors and a box full of treats.

“He likes to stay indoors and on the concrete and I mean, it suits his job. He's getting called for health and welfares at other bases, to sweep dorms, he's searching trucks at the commercial gate,” said Sgt. Paul Olmos, 30th Security Forces Squadron Kennel Master.

Jewel also assisted in multiple operations with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office during his career.

One of Jewel's first handlers plans to adopt him.
