Animal control officer rescues ducklings from storm drain
HAYWARD, Calif. - A Hayward Animal Control Officer valiantly saved 11 baby ducks after they fell into a storm drain on Wednesday.
Hayward Police said the mama duck had been walking across Chabot College campus with her 12 ducklings when 11 of them became trapped in the drain.
Upon realizing what had happened, the mother began quacking loudly which caught the attention of a passerby. A Chabot College Maintenance and Operations staff member then came to remove the grate on the drain, but the baby ducks scattered deeper into the pipes.
That is when Animal Control Officer Susan Perez arrived to save the day. Perez said she is familiar with rescuing a variety of animals from storm drains.
Perez entered the drain and began playing mama duck sounds from her phone to draw the ducklings closer to her. Then one by one the ducklings were removed from the pipe and reunited with their mama.
