Three animal services collaborate to ease crowding shelters

PETSMART

Animal shelters across the county are getting crowded with animals in need of a home.

This weekend dozens of tiny cats and dogs came to Petsmart as part of the Adoptathon hosted by the Santa Barbara County Animal Services and several other organizations.

“We are out to look for homes to save as many live as we possibly can in the local area of Goleta,” said store leader Gloria Castrellon with Petsmart.

To help save these lives, three organizations came together.

“It's important to us between the Santa Barbara County Animal Services and our partnership with ASAP and Buttons to support all the local animals in need of a home. We take all of the strays and the unwanted animals in our community,” said volunteer Jean Marie with the Santa Barbara County Animal Services.

While the three groups are planning upcoming events such as Santa's Sleepover, volunteers said it's getting crowded in all of the shelters.

Right now ASAP is completely full with more than 150 kittens and cats hoping for a home.

“The shelter is so full right now. We just hope to get as many cats and kittens in homes,” said foster program director Gina Sunseri of ASAP.

The Adoptathon served as a way for families to come meet the animals and see how they interact outside of the shelter environment.

If you can't adopt a pet, Marie said there are other ways you can help support the shelters liking donating supplies and volunteering.

All pets available for adoption are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
