Santa Barbara’s Stearns Wharf celebrates 147 years

Stearns Wharf in Santa Barbara is celebrating its anniversary this month.

Some merchants will offer anniversary specials during the month of October.

Built in 1872, Stearns Wharf has been in the city for 147 years.

It’s the oldest working wood wharf in California.

It was originally built to help transfer cargo and people from ships to the shore.

John Peck Stearns who owned a lumber yard at the base of State Street built the wharf.

Historians say Stearns Wharf has survived severe storms, fires and even a tornado.
