Santa Maria doctors weigh in on how long immunity from COVID-19 vaccines last

SANTA MARIA, Calif. - Doctors at Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria are certain COVID-19 vaccines give strong immunity to those who receive it.

But a big question still being determined is how long that immunity lasts.

"I think most researchers understand that this immunity is at full strength for at least for up to six months, and with some individuals it may extend stand way beyond that," said Dr. Scott Robertson at Marian Regional Medical Center.

Robertson says research is showing it’s possible another vaccination could be needed after 12 to 18 months like a flu shot.

"Particularly if we start seeing additional variants in the communities, individuals who received the vaccine initially will likely require a booster vaccine at some point," said Robertson.

"I’ll do what I can to keep people safe. I get the flu vaccine every year so why not do the same with the COVID-19 vaccine," said resident Jordan Butler of Santa Maria.

While researchers are still learning about the vaccine, Robertson said so far it has shown to be extremely effective in reducing the transmission of the virus. "It’s absolutely worth it to take the vaccine. The vaccine significantly reduces your risk of severe COVID-19 and hospitalizations, and brings your risk of death almost down to zero."

So if you’re eligible to receive the vaccine, Robertson suggests to go get it.

"I plan on getting it to do my part, and help keep other people safe," said Butler.
