MADRID (AP) — A Spanish right-wing politician is recovering in a hospital after being shot in the face on a street in central Madrid. Alejandro Vidal-Quadras told police he suspects his work on behalf of the Iranian opposition was linked to the murder attempt. Police said there was no evidence backing the Iranian link but it was being considered as a hypothesis. The 78-year-old Vidal-Quadras was a member of Spain’s conservative Popular Party before he broke away to help found the far-right Vox party. The gunshot broke his jawbone and will require surgery. He is in stable condition and his life was not in danger.
