Golden Lion Tamarin baby born at Santa Barbara Zoo
A baby Golden Lion Tamarin (GLT) has been born at the Santa Barbara Zoo.
The baby GLT was born on May 4, 2018. It will be 30 days from birth before zoo officials give it a check-up to determine the sex, weight, height, and receive vaccinations.
Both of its parents share parenting duties as the baby GLT rides on the back of either “mom” or “dad” for the next few months.
GLT’s are among the most endangered mammals on earth. More than 99 percent of their forest habitat in Brazil has been cut down for lumber, agriculture, and housing.
The baby and three adult Golden Lion Tamarins are on view at the GLT enclosure near the Zoo Train Station. However, zoo officials say the GLT parents have free access to their off-exhibit area so there’s a possibility visitors may not see the baby.
