Fire at a Texas prison forces inmates to evacuate, but no injuries are reported

By KEN MILLER and PAUL J. WEBER

An official says a fire at a Texas state prison did not affect the chamber where condemned inmates are executed. A spokesperson for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice says Friday morning’s fire at the prison in Huntsville is also not expected to affect the execution schedule. The next one is set for October. The fire forced more than 650 inmates to evacuate but injured no one. About 400 of the displaced inmates will be sent to other facilities. The fire appeared to be confined to the upper floor of an administration building and the attic of a housing unit. The cause isn’t yet known.
