California Men’s Colony to allow visitation following large-scale riot

The California Men’s Colony prison in San Luis Obispo County will be allowing visitation in their West Facility and Facility D on the east side following a large-scale riot at the prison Sunday morning.
No inmates will be allowed to move without an escort. Facilities A, B, and C are still on a modified program.
Authorities said a total of nine inmates were sent to the hospital following the riot.
Six inmates were taken to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center and two others were taken to French Hospital Medical Center. One of the inmates taken to Sierra Vista, who was previously listed in critical condition, is now listed in stable condition.
The investigation into the riot that left one inmate dead is ongoing.

An inmate is dead following a large-scale riot that broke out inside California Men’s Colony in San Luis Obispo County Sunday morning.
The riot began just before 11 a.m. after a number of inmates began fighting inside the East Facility medium-custody yard.
The prison was put on lockdown while guards broke up the riot.
160 inmates were involved in the riot with many receiving stab wounds.
Nine inmates were transported to area hospitals for treatment of various injuries. Authorities said three inmates remain at a local hospital as of Monday morning–their condition is unknown.
One of the inmates involved in the incident was declared dead just after 1 p.m.
He has been identified as Matthew Cook, 25. Cook has been at CMC since 2015. He was sentenced out of San Joaquin County on a 13-year, 8-month sentence for several counts of burglary in the first degree.
His family has been notified.
Sierra Vista Hospital staff said another inmate is currently in critical condition.
Visitors were evacuated and visitation was canceled for the remainder of the day while prison staff cleared the area and investigated the circumstances that led to the riot. Prison officials hope to have a decision allowing weekend visitation by Thursday.
No staff at the facility were injured in the incident.
