Three Rio Mesa seniors injured in crash involving suspected DUI driver

Three Rio Mesa High School seniors were injured early Thursday morning in a crash involving a suspected DUI driver.

The crash happened at around 4:40 a.m. near the intersection of Central Avenue and State Route 232/Vineyard Avenue near Oxnard and Camarillo.

The three students were riding in a Ford Mustang that was stopped at a red light when they were rear-ended by the driver of a Hyundai Elantra.

The impact caused the mustang to slam into the back of a Honda Accord that was also waiting at the stop light.

The driver of the Hyundai Elantra was uninjured and was arrested at the scene. He has been identified as Mario Arjon, 27, of Oxnard.

The 18-year-old driver of the Mustang and a 17-year-old passenger were transported to a local hospital with major injuries. One of those students remains in critical condition.

According to a statement from Rio Mesa High School, the students had just returned back from Grad Night festivities in Disneyland. The crash happened as the the students were returning home.

Rio Mesa High School graduation was held on Friday at 2 p.m. in Oxnard. The parents of the students accepted the diplomas on behalf of their children.

On Thursday morning three Rio Mesa High School seniors had returned to the school from grad night festivities. As they got into their car and headed home, they were struck by an alleged drunk driver on Central Road in Camarillo. All three passengers were transported to the hospital. Two of the students are doing better and one remains in critical condition. The district and school site are working closely with the families and are receiving constant updates on the conditions of the students. The school is providing additional counseling services to the Rio Mesa High students. Family members will be accepting diplomas on their students’ behalves.
