Santa Maria celebrate Public Works Week, multiple projects underway
SANTA MARIA, Calif. – The City of Santa Maria celebrates Public Works Week on Wednesday night. The purpose is to highlight workers who maintain and protect the transportation systems, water supply, sewer systems and more.
“The staff is unbelievably important,” said Brett Fulgoni with the City of Santa Maria. “They often go unnoticed.”
The City of Santa Maria takes a moment to celebrate public works week, and pay tribute to those employees.
“If you don’t have a road to drive to work on,” said Fulgoni. “If you don’t have a water line that is delivering fresh water. If you don’t have a sewer that’s collecting sewage, you’re going to have a difficult time going about your day.”
Currently, the city has several projects underway.
One of them is the sidewalk project near the cemetary.
One lane is closed on South College, so workers can have room to work on the sidewalk.
“For sure, be careful around construction projects because everybody that is working on construction projects has a family,” said Fulgoni. “Please be careful and mindful of their safety.”
Another project underway is the chapel plaza in downtown santa maria.
The city says it will create pleasing landscaping, multi-use parking, recreational venues, and a neighborhood gathering place.
“We’re going to have this great area for both activities and events as well as just hanging out and enjoying being outside with some green space,” said Dennis Smitherman. “So here we will have a nice venue for concerts and food trucks and fairs and festivals.”
The city says there are still countless projects happening in Santa Maria. All they have to do is solidify the dates.
“We are also working on our Veteran's Memorial Park which is a complete renovation,” said Smitherman. “A 2 in half-million dollar project funded by the State of California Parks and Recreation Department. We also have Preisker Park, we have a great new walking trail that will wrap around the entire area to keep our patrons safe.”
