Tibetan Monks Creating Mandalas Across Central Coast

VIDEO: Tibetan Monks Creating Mandalas Across Central Coast

OCEANO, Calif. – Several Tibetan monks have spent the last month promoting peace through religious art in San Luis Obispo County.

The group comes from the Drepung Gomang Monastery in India and they are currently spending the next week at the Oceano Train Depot creating their latest mandala.

Mandalas are geometric designs created with layers of colorful sand and can take days to complete.

The public is invited to watch them between the hours of 10 and 4 until Sunday at 2 p.m., when the design will be wiped clean to symbolize the impermanence of the material world.

The monks will start a new mandala on Monday at Allan Hancock College.
