Sea Lion Pup Rescued From An Oxnard Industrial Plant

A confused sea lion pup found himself in a bit of a pickle Monday morning.

Officials from The Channel Islands Marine & Wildlife Institute were called to New-Indy Containerboard LLC at 5936 Perkins Road in Oxnard at about 4 a.m. to rescue the pup.

Officials said the sea lion pup traveled several miles from the beach to the industrial building, which had to be shut down while the pup was rescued from between the machinery it had crawled into.

The condition of the pup was not immediately known.

Marine and Wildlife officials said this was the 216th pup picked up from Ventura County. They also said that mother sea lions seem to be making longer trips to find food, which means leaving the pups alone for longer periods of time. During that time the pups begin wandering around, a decision that ultimately leads them to become stranded in situations like this one.
