Northbound Highway 101 reopens near Gaviota after rockslide
GAVIOTA, Calif. – Northbound Highway 101 reopened Monday afternoon after a rockslide carrying debris and large boulders brought traffic to a standstill for several hours.
It happened on the northbound side of the highway around 11:15 a.m. just south of Las Cruces and the Highway 1 interchange.
According to the California Highway Patrol online incident log, large boulders blocked the northbound side of the road. One person reported a boulder as big as four feet high was blocking traffic.
Traffic was backed up all the way to Mariposa Reina, according to CHP. Southbound traffic was unaffected by the closure.
The rockslide prompted Caltrans to declare a SIGAlert, meaning an unplanned closure could be in effect for more than 30 minutes. CHP escorted some of the stranded drivers through one lane of traffic.
At around 1:45 p.m., the roadway was completely reopened to northbound traffic.
