McGrath campground remains closed
Campers missed out on spring break camping at McGrath State Beach, and now they are missing out on Memorial Day weekend, too.
Because of flooding, no reservations can be made.
Water is no longer blocking the entrance off Harbor Boulevard, but it has flooded the campsites, picnic tables and the bathrooms.
Supervisor John Zaragoza blames a half-mile sand berm blocking the water from the ocean.
Heavy rain usually breaks down the berm every spring.
Environmentalists don’t want the sand to be bulldozed, but if something isn’t done soon, supervisors are worried stagnant water will become a breading ground for mosquitoes.
Zaragoza hopes a solution will be found during a meeting with state and local agencies next Wednesday.
