Portion of Paso Robles facing possible rolling outage Thursday night

KEYT

PASO ROBLES, Calif. - Residents of Paso Robles could lose power Thursday evening as part of rolling outages that could go into place from 7-9 p.m.

The City of Paso Robles alerted residents Thursday evening that Pacific Gas and Electric, the utility that provides power in that area, could cut power as temperatures and energy consumption continues to climb.

City officials are urging residents to conserve power in the hours leading up to the outage window, in hopes of avoiding any loss of power.

The California Independent System Operator (CAISO) says that the demand for electricity Thursday afternoon and evening could exceed the available supply. PG&E says most of the energy consumption is from air conditioners that are in use due to incredibly high temperatures in many areas. Outages could affect more than 120,000 customers across the state.

CAISO has not yet called for rotating outages at this time, PG&E said.

PG&E says rotating outages differ from Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS). Rolling outages are due to increased demand issues across the state, whereas a PSPS is due to increased wildfire risk and severe weather.

As of 5:30 p.m., it remains unclear if Paso Robles will be hit with an outage.
